Handyman & home maintenance

Before contacting a business

A list of small jobs is more useful than a general request for a handyman. Separate each task, note where it is located and say whether you have bought the materials. Ask the business which tasks it accepts and which need a specialist. A broad home-maintenance category is not evidence of permission or qualifications for specialist work.

Questions for your shortlist

• What are the individual tasks, in priority order?
• Which materials or fittings are already available?
• Which tasks can this business handle, and which need a specialist?

Ask whether pricing is per task or by time, whether there is a minimum visit charge, and how unfinished or additional tasks are handled.
