Building & renovation

Before contacting a business

Renovation enquiries need a clear boundary between the desired result and the work already specified. Explain the rooms or areas involved, what must remain usable and whether plans or surveys exist. A general contractor may coordinate several trades, but responsibility for design, approvals and specialist work must be agreed rather than assumed from a directory category.

Questions for your shortlist

• What result is wanted, and what is explicitly outside the scope?
• What plans, surveys or other project information already exist?
• Who coordinates the trades, decisions and changes?

Compare the scope, assumptions, named responsibilities, sequence, payment milestones and the process for approving variations in writing.
